A B O U T

The Harvard-Radcliffe Modern Dance Company is the longest-running student-run dance company at Harvard College. We are a contemporary dance group that welcomes a wide variety of dance styles and we are dedicated to creating and supporting innovative student choreography and performance.

HRMDC offers members weekly company classes (Mondays 8:00-9:30 pm in Harvard Dance Center), guest workshops, and the opportunity to choreograph and perform in the company's biannual show at the Harvard Dance Center.

We also strive to expose our dancers to professional and challenging choreography occurring in the greater dance community. Each semester, we bring in guest choreographers to create or to set pieces on our dancers as well as local Boston dance instructors to teach company class. Past choreographers and teachers include Elizabeth Weil Bergmann, Jodi Leigh Allen, David Leventhal, Nailah Randall-Bellinger, Carey Foster, Brenda Divelbliss, Tommy Neblett, Erika Pujic, Steven Vaughn, and Olivier Besson.

Most importantly, for most people in the company, HRMDC is about being with a family of dancers and friends. We welcome people from diverse dance backgrounds and people with no experience whatsoever. As long as you have a passion for dance and for movement, and are willing to give as good as you've got, you have a place in HRMDC.

"Over my eleven years of directing Dance at Harvard, HRMDC has been the group that has enjoyed making dances and experimenting in new ways with how to present movement ideas to an audience. One can always count on HRMDC for originality as well as sophistication and creative thinking. From dancing in Harvard Yard during Arts First, to bringing bowls of water onstage for an evocative dance piece, HRMDC offers us a chance to watch a group challenge the boundaries of what dance is all about. Over the years the group has grown in numbers as well as developed their dancing skills along with their choreographic ones. HRMDC draws to its group, students who want to experience each other in improvisatory as well as choreographic situations. Supporting each other by dancing in each other’s dances, critiquing each other’s choreography and being open to very new ideas, this group has been successful over the years in producing warm, interesting, and open dancers." - Elizabeth Weil Bergmann, Former Director of Harvard Dance Department

"I started working with HRMDC back when they were HRDC in 1999. Performances were in the Reiman Center and we would have to cart up audience chairs from the basement! Things like the name and performance location have changed, but I think the constant in this company is the members' adventurous approach to dancing. There are always creative choreographers and it is fascinating to see the dances that these artists create!" - Brenda Divelbliss, HRMDC teacher
